Day 12: Kootenay National Park

We treated today as a bonus day! Despite the lingering clouds, a bit of wildfire smoke, and rivers running muddy from recent extreme rain, we made the most of it. We drove about 40 minutes out to pack our day with stunning views and hikes, hitting up Numa Falls, the Paint Pots, and Marble Canyon.

During the drive, we listened to the Acquired podcast to learn about the history of Vanguard and the creation of index funds. Teaching the boys about investing has been one of our goals for the summer, and this was the perfect way to kick it off. They were engaged and eager to learn!

We always love crossing the Continental Divide (2020, 2021), though this particular sign has definitely seen better days. This spot (Vermilion Pass along Highway 93) is also the border between Banff and Kootenay national parks.

Later, we witnessed a striking river confluence where crystal-clear spring water perfectly merges with the milky, rock-flour-filled runoff of a glacier.

Heading back closer to our campsite, we squeezed in a scenic two-mile hike around Johnson Lake.

Once we returned, Rob hit the campground’s mountain biking trails and even managed to spot a fox.

We wrapped up the evening by packing the RV for tomorrow’s early departure and long haul to Jasper. We spent a couple of hours mapping out our route—when you’re navigating a 55-foot rig, figuring out exact rest stops and viable parking options requires some serious logistical planning.
