Day 2: Longest Leg

As of right now, today is the longest planned drive day of the whole trip: 6 hours and 20 minutes. Because we can visit places close to home more easily, we’re moving east as fast as possible for a few days.

We all slept great and the kids even slept until 8:30 a.m! The boys and I then headed into Cabela’s to explore and see the fish tanks our neighbor told us about. Rob stayed back to sort out why the tow car battery died after our first day of towing.

First stop was Costco for gas, and since it was 10:45 a.m. we combined it with a lunch stop (close enough). We are always surprised when people pull in behind us at the gas station when other lanes have a similar number of cars waiting. Filling the RV with 60 gallons and then the tow car with another 10, we take a while. Lunch was on the road while Kelly drove.

Our drive took us through beautiful scenery from grassy creeks, to mountain passes and through fields. We stopped at our original planned rest stop to eat dinner and then everyone was feeling so well we decided to push through for another hour to shorten our drive time tomorrow.

Our final destination tonight was a Kiwanis-sponsored rest area/campground adjacent to the airport in Lewiston, MT. Since it was a weekend day, Kelly and Rob were able to share the driving: nearly 8 hours of driving in an 11-hour day (including time zone change). It was another late night with arrival at 9pm and bedtime after 10 p.m.

  1. Wow! That’s a lot of driving for the first few days! The pictures of the open roads in ID and MT make me smile as I hope those are easier long drives then in the city! Hope the car battery was an easy fix! Drive safe!! Nicole
