The Info, Stats, and Plan
The Rig
Our Motorhome is a 2017 Winnebago Vista 31BE, which is a “bunkhouse” floorplan, meaning it has bunk beds. It’s 32 feet long, with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 18,000 lbs.
The tow car is a 2014 Chevy Sonic, which we recently purchased specifically to use as a tow car. More about that decision in a future post.
And because we need more wheels, the Sonic is sporting a tow hitch holding a bike rack, which in turn is holding our four bikes.
In case that’s not enough transportation, we’re also carrying two inflatable kayaks and a couple Razor scooters.
You’re how long?
From the bumper in front to the last bike in the back, we’re 55 feet long (a standard semi truck trailer is 53 feet). Despite being crazy long, we don’t need a special license to drive it. Anything 45 feet and under can be driven with a standard license, and tow cars and bikes don’t count. Scary, huh?
The plan
Our plan is to drive around the US for approximately three months, with a goal of being back home in time for Christmas. We initially planned to head to New England to see fall colors, but after mapping out that route we realized we’d have to haul ass across the country to be there in time to see leaves (and not piles of snow).
Our new plan is shown below. It is very fluid, as we are only planning a week out, which is a huge mental shift for me as I thrive having a plan. We would love any and all feedback if you are familiar with anywhere along our route. Internet research can only go so far on trying to find fun places to stay and things to do.
I highly recommend a slight northern detour to see the south of Utah. Moab (with Arches National Park) is incredible, and there are several other national parks in the area if you want to stay further south.
Yes, thanks! We definitely want to do that, but weren’t sure about what the weather will be like. We’re talking about doing another trip next Summer where we go there. But the nice thing is that it’s easy to change our plans if the weather looks good.
