Day 1: Departure!

One last picture at home

The day was finally here: time to go! We woke up early, eager to get going, but knowing we still had a ton of work to do before we were ready. After hours and hours of loading stuff in the motorhome, we started running out of things to pack, but fortunately still had plenty of storage space.

The rig is secure and ready to go!

Kelly started driving, and I rode the first few blocks in the car, just to make sure everything seemed okay. It seems so unnatural to tow a car (with a bike rack on the back, no less), so we were a little paranoid.

The view out the back window, still paranoid about the car.

On the highway, with everything looking and sounding good, we started to relax a little. It was a straight shot down I-90 to our first planned stop.

Crossing our first state line!

Just off of exit 1 in Idaho is a Cabellas, which offers free overnight RV parking in their lot. Since we were just getting started, we figured we didn’t need hookups and thus could save a few bucks. There were only a few other RVs there when we arrived, and things seemed pretty quiet.

Our first meal on the trip. Keeping it simple to start–but hey, there’s a vegetable there, too!

Only one small hiccup today: we couldn’t get any of the propane appliances started at first. After turning off the tank and waiting a few minutes to let the regulator reset, it started working, much to our relief. All in all, a great first day!
