Day 2: Traveling to Glacier National Park
After a quick breakfast and stroll over to Washington (since the Cabela’s is just over the border in Idaho), we hit the road eager to arrive at our first “real” destination.
Along the way we stopped for gas and learned it takes a while to pump 70 gallons. This was enough time for me to make lunch while Rob pumped the gas and cleaned the windshield.
After about five hours of driving, we finally arrived at the campground: West Glacier RV Park. Our site (and all the others) was a long and wide pull-through, which made it easy to park. The kids wanted to set everything up and check out the RV park, but with iffy weather on the horizon for Monday and work/school days after that, Rob and I were eager to check out Glacier National Park.
We hit the Going-to-the-Sun Road around 4 p.m., which was not ideal after a full day of driving, but we thought it may be our only opportunity to do the 2+ hour adventure.
First up was the not-quite-a-mile Trail of the Cedars walk, where we learned about the three kinds of trees found there: Black Cottonwood, Western Hemlock, and Western Red Cedar
Cooper loved throwing rocks into the river and checking out the cool textured bark of the Black Cottonwood.
We continued up the road to Logan Pass, which is on the Continental Divide. The weather up there was freezing (ok, not really, but pretty close), and we were in shorts and short sleeves. Everyone was a good sport about it.
This trip is going to be fantastic.
