Day 40: Beating the Heat at the Beach

Rob had an unscheduled work morning, so after talking with the campsite staff the boys and Kelly opted to take the local trolley to nearby Old Orchard Beach. The town looked like a super sized version of Seaside, Oregon with lots of dessert shops, small amusement park, and arcade, but we skipped all that and went straight for the sand.

A 10 a.m. beach trip with the tide out was perfect for frisbee and body surfing. It was the one day we’ve wished we’d brought the boogie boards on the trip.

By 2 p.m. we were exhausted, and the place was packed!

We also don’t mess around when it comes to digging in the sand. Real shovels only for this crew.

Rob picked us up from the beach after his meetings ended, and we headed home for showers and lunch. We attempted to explore the Portland, Maine area, but it was SO hot (the car said 106 on the road) that our outings were short or just slow drive-bys. We did stop at the most photographed lighthouse in Maine, Portland Head Light.

We wrapped up the day with dinner and ice cream at Costco, apparently the only one in Maine and only two years old. Cooper picked out a backpack for school; we are slowly realizing that “real life” is less than a month away.

Nicholas forgot we were sticking to the shopping list.

The gal helping Kelly with her glasses once lived on Capital Hill in Seattle, so it was a fun cross-country bonding moment for her.
