Day 16: Christmas in July and Waterfalls
We couldn’t resist one cheesy joke—after all, we’re in Christmas, Michigan, where even the street names are holiday-themed.

Today was a slow start, with the kids in bed until 9:30. We took the day to see more of the eastern North Shore and chase some waterfalls: Wagner Falls, Miners Falls, Miners Castle (totally not a waterfall), and Sable Falls. Some of us are getting waterfall fatigue, but the view from Miners Castle down to Lake Superior was amazing.

Fun facts:
- Lake Superior contains 10% of the world’s fresh water.
- If you condensed all the water on Earth into a one-gallon jug, just one tablespoon would be drinkable freshwater.
- 97% is seawater and another 2% is locked in glaciers.
We had a late lunch at Lake Superior Brewing Company’s Grand Marais location, which has been a bar for over 100 years and a brewery for the last 30. The restaurant was packed, so we grabbed a table outside. Just before the food arrived, the temperature dropped and Rob spotted a wall of storms heading our way on radar. Moments later, the staff ushered us—and the rest of the patio crowd—into a cozy room inside. Minutes after we sat down, the skies opened up. Nice save, Rob! Lunch was worth the scramble: Kelly had whitefish tacos, Rob went for the whitefish salad, and according to our friendly waitress, the fish was “swimming yesterday fresh.”

No one was very hungry for dinner, so we stopped to get some local savory and sweet pasties (like a fancy hot pocket) from Muldoon’s; unsurprisingly raspberry was everyone’s favorite. Delirious and giggling, the boys engineered a personal cooling system involving three fans and a baseball cap. With that, we called it a night—cooled down and happily tired from another full day of adventures.
