Day 17: 4 states in less than 4 hours on the 4th

Time to add another state to our RV list: Colorado! Today we visited many states, as we wound our way from Monument Valley past Four Corners and to our final destination of Mesa Verde.

The boys kicked off the morning with a first: a run together. We have done family runs, and they have run with me, but they’ve never run with just Rob. They made it a mile in the morning heat and sunshine, which was impressive. I enjoyed a quiet walk around the campground while they were gone.

Once we packed up, we stopped by the local grocery store. The we all oohed and ahhed at the all they had available in a small town. We were glad to grab a few fruits and veggies which haven’t been available to us for a while. These weeks in small towns helped us appreciate the plethora of options we have at home.

Next we hit the road. It was long, straight, and pretty bumpy for the most part. Rob drove first, and it seemed to smooth out a bit more when it was my turn to drive. The plan was to take the extra four minutes to drive on the road that passed Four Corners Monument and stop there for lunch, even though it is currently closed. It turns out the parking lot was also closed, so we just kept driving. Pretty sure between flying over the Four Corners when Cooper was one year old and now driving by it, I am going to call it good. I thought it would be underwhelming before and am going to stick with that.

Time for some humble pie. As we were navigating intersections in a neighborhood, I got a bit overconfident and told the family “I’ve got this,” feeling pretty good after the 10k+ miles of driving the RV towing the car. Wouldn’t you know it the next intersection there was a slight drainage ditch which made the trailer hitch scrape a little? It has happened before and is hard to avoid, but the timing was quite comical after I was just sharing my confidence in driving.

We arrived at the Mesa Verde RV Resort, and the boys immediately spotted the pool. After getting settled in we hit the pool and this time even got to enjoy some hot tub time after.

With some extra time, we ventured into the Mesa Verde National Park and stopped at an outlook to get a taste of what we’d get to enjoy over the next couple days. This place is so green and beautiful. It is packed full of tons of colorful wildflowers right now too.

Once back from the park, Rob jumped on dinner, and the boys and I did our laundry thing. We are calling it an early night as I didn’t pack a lot of patience today, so hopefully some more sleep will give us all an awesome day tomorrow.
