Day 95: Haulin’ up I-5
So much driving today. We left our roadside casino at 8 a.m. and didn’t park until 5:30 p.m. with only a gas/lunch stop at Costco. We added our final new state, Oregon, to the trip list. Many mountain passes today including Shasta and Siskiyou. There is talk of snow later in the week, so we are very glad to get over them all today and be done with the mountain pass portion of our travels. We will have a smaller one tomorrow to get us over to the ocean at Pacific City.
Something we haven’t mentioned is seeing all of the fire damage as we have traveled up the west coast. We had to plan around it in California (closed campgrounds) and passed it on our route along the ocean. Today, passing a destroyed mobile home park along the freeway in Medford, OR was a reminder of just how horrible the devastation is.
Rob took a 20-minute shift before lunch and then wrapped up the day for us with a 1.5 hour shift to the rest stop where we will boondock the night once again. This rest stop was nice because it wasn’t directly next to the freeway, so it was a bit quieter. It was also packed with a truck or RV in every parking spot.
As we are wrapping up the night, writing blog posts, doing work and planning our route we started to hear the rain. Such a familiar sound, but it has also been pretty much non existent this trip.
What a beautiful picture of Lake Shasta!
