Day 68: Fort Walton Beach for Veterans Day

A day off from school means fried eggs for breakfast, at least in this RV. We laid low after a quick beach walk this morning so Rob could work and then we could have a family afternoon in Fort Walton Beach.

Found a friend on the beach
The boys LOVE using beach showers

The boys negotiated an hour of Minecraft which meant some thinking space for me. This morning I was very productive fixing little things broken around the RV, cleaning, and finally verifying our ID to close out our tax return. That last piece took a bit of time. They sent us a letter with a special code which I somehow never took a picture of, so I had to find the actual letter again. I checked all of my go-to places in the RV (this place isn’t that big) but couldn’t find it. After 30 minutes I told Rob I would have to order another letter since there is nowhere else it could be. He immediately looked in the cubby next to him and pulled out the letter with a big grin on his face. “Oh, is this what you were looking for?” It was the only place left, and glad he found it.

Rob really wanted to take us to what he considers the best pork barbecue place (though it had been nearly 20 years since he’d been there). It is only open for lunch Monday-Friday, so today was our only day to go, and thankfully they were open on Veteran’s day. We all agreed the chipped pork sandwiches and fries were amazing.

The inside hadn’t changed at all

On the way to the beach we stopped by the house where Rob’s grandparents retired, on Okaloosa Island. The family sold it a few years ago, so we didn’t go too close, but did get out of the car to walk down the driveway.

Rob’s grandparents place that he visited as a kid. It was not that color.

The beach time that followed was super fun: body boarding, carving elaborate tracks and holes in the sand, more beach football, and paddle ball. Rob loved seeing the boys playing on the exact same beach he grew up going to. We stayed until sunset then headed back to the RV for dinner and to close out the night.

Nicholas is really into air guitar these days
Cheers!
