Day 66: Intrastate Driving

Today we drove ALL DAY in South Dakota. Cooper started us off with a clean windshield before we hit the road.

En route we saw many fields of sunflowers, some bright yellow with the heads facing up and many more primarily green with the heads hanging down.

Here is an example of Rob’s “office” view out the back while we’re on the road.

Our final destination today was the Elk Mountain Campground in Wind Cave National Park.

Once set up, we enjoyed a short hike on the Cold Brook Canyon Trail, where we were surrounded by prairie dog towns on both sides midway through.

We headed to town to grab some firewood, and on the way back we had some visitors on the road.

We wrapped up the evening with hot dogs and s’mores over the fire with our newly purchased wood. The kids were super tired, so kindly put themselves to bed while we stayed out to watch the stars. We saw so many satellites, an experience very different from our childhood star watching nights. We called it a night after we both saw a shooting star. We have decided to limit the technology at this stop to really enjoy the peacefulness here as we wrap up our 10 week trip.
