Day 63: Skipping Chicago for Milwaukee Pizza (and Oshkosh)

Today’s plan takes us through Chicago, but we don’t have time to stop. However, we did decide to splurge on paying more tolls to take I-90 through the city vs. bypassing it on the west side. Rob was our big city driver and did fantastic.

We passed by a huge Haribo building and the kids were disappointed we hadn’t planned for a tour there. We assured them we looked into it, but they don’t do tours anymore.

We passed through Chicago in the morning, too early for lunch, but Rob made sure we still got an authentic deep dish pizza experience a bit later at Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria in outside Milwaukee.

The pizza stop was very close to another Thomas Dambo troll, which we love. The Mama Rosa troll was located in the coolest park, perfect to reenergize after a big meal.

Our final stop of the day was the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Rob has wanted to go to the fly-in for nearly 20 years, but the week long event timing has never worked out with our summer calendar. It wasn’t the same thing to go to the museum (without the thousands of other people and airplanes), but it was still super cool. They have the Van’s RV-1 and first Van’s RV-3 model here (same manufacturer as our plane kit).

Nicholas even got to take a Young Eagle flight (a first time flying in a small plane without Rob as the pilot). Cooper passed on that opportunity and instead checked out more planes in the museum.

Goodbye, EAA museum, until we see you again one day (perhaps via our airplane for the fly-in). Tonight’s campsite is in another beautiful spot, surrounded by fields of corn and soybeans.
