Day 38: Boston, also in One Day

Today we did Boston, and like NYC, we did it in one day. The kids hadn’t been there, so we wanted to see a little bit of everything. We walked from our parking spot to Quincy Market to get some food, dodging a little rain and checking out the Old State House along the way.

Months earlier we’d bought tickets to today’s Red Sox game, a matinee vs. the Dodgers. Rather than try to drive (and worse, park) near Fenway, we took the Green Line to Kenmore Square (the stop closest to Fenway Park and also a block away from Rob’s old house. “Why are we going so slow?” “Why do we keep stopping?” “Why did the lights go out?” I’m glad the kids got an authentic introduction to the Green Line. Rob couldn’t believe they seemingly hadn’t fixed anything in the 22 years since he lived here.

We walked through Rob’s old neighborhood and into the stadium just in time for the game, if it hadn’t had a rain delay. Being from Seattle, with a retractable roof stadium, the kids were unfamiliar with weather affecting a game.

Fortunately the delay was short and the grounds crew kept us entertained until the delayed start.

The Red Sox won a good, close game, which was fun to watch. Rob’s friend Eric and two of his kids were just in front of us, so they were able to catch up for much of the game.

After the game we visited Rob’s old fraternity house, then did the walk across the river to MIT, which he’d done so many times during college.

We wrapped up this full day with some historical stops in Boston: Boston Common, Park Street Church, Granary Burial Ground, Old North Church (including driving through the North End during some sort of festival), and the USS Constitution. It was quite late, so we mostly drove by these places and thus will need to spend a bit longer next time we’re in town.
