Day 14: Kaikoura: Peninsula Walk

Yesterday was about the sea, today was about the land. This peninsula walk can be an out-and-back along the cliff edge, or if the tide is low you can walk back along the base of the cliffs. We were able to do the latter. The views from the top were spectacular: the ocean surrounded by fields and cows, including a calf nursing.

Seals and seagulls surrounded us down below. We even saw a nursing seal pup with its family. By some miracle none of us were pooped on.

Both boys are like billy goats on these uneven rocks. They make it look so easy to navigate them and were all smiles the whole time.

So many different creatures and plants in one small hole in the rocks

Went to see some local sheep sheering with Troy the dog. The wool from the Drysdale sheep is the kind of sheep wool they use to make carpet. They get sheared twice a year vs. all other sheep get sheared once a year. Drysdale wool sells for $3/kilo where Merino wool sells for $20/kilo.

Rob was obsessed with the seal caution sign so we finally stopped and there is a hilarious video of these three entertaining themselves there.

]Midday a random fire alarm went off in the office of our complex so we got to see the volunteer fire department in action. Unfortunately, this led to more things for Nicholas to worry about at night. Poor guy. The last time he and I slept through the night was after doing the long hike. Please wish him comfort and sleepy thoughts; the little guy is long overdue for a full night’s rest.

Rob ended the evening by taking the boys to the beach to play in the rocks despite the downpour that started shortly after they headed there.

Soaking went and happy boys
Art by Nicholas to remind us we still owe them ice cream from the hike
