Day 71: Destin to Pensacola Beach

Yay for Saturday! We snuck in one more visit to the beach in Destin since checkout wasn’t until 1 p.m. The weather and waves were calm and perfect.

The Henderson Beach State Park was a wonderful stop for us. The site was huge, there was a paved loop for bike riding, we could walk to the beach, the internet connection was really good for quality calls, and there were no biting bugs at the site.

Once packed up and cleaned up we headed to our final beach destination, Pensacola Beach. After getting some food in our bodies from Shrimp Basket, we were on our way.

Fried crab claws and hush puppies, a Gulf Coast seafood staple

We had to stop and play a round at the miniature golf place that Rob grew up going to with his dad. I lost to Rob by one shot on the final hole, but Rob was also the scorekeeper so I am blaming my loss on that. The boys tied each other and were happy about that.

Air guitar warmups for everyone

After mini golf, we hit Alvin’s Island (a cheesy tourist shop) for a Fort Walton Beach souvenir. We ended up with an ornament for our tree and each boy bought a Blue Angels fighter jet.

All of the side trips and beach time in the morning lead to a evening arrival at our next spot.

After dinner at the new site, I surprised the boys and took them to the pool for an evening swim. They were thrilled! The pool was heated, but the outside air was not, so I watched from the side.
