Day 34: Driving to Hunting Island

It was a short 1.5 hour drive, but somehow we still managed to not arrive until 5 p.m. We didn’t leave the last site until 11, then did a super stock-up at Costco along the way, including refueling both vehicles. Rob wins the Tetris award for getting all of these food purchases in the refrigerator and pantry.

Simultaneous refueling. The bill for car was much less

By the way, if you see an RV at a gas station go, to a different bay. We are pumping 60+ gallons every time we stop, which takes way longer than even 2 vehicles each filling 12 gallons. Just a public service announcement to save you the frustration in the future.

Entering Hunting Island
The landscape is super tropical

Our destination for today was Hunting Island State Park, just outside Beaufort, South Carolina. Rob had to go into the office to check in. While we waited, Cooper and I had a first: were able to detach the tow car on our own. Nicholas and I then took the car to the site and unloaded the bikes while Rob and Cooper went to do a final dump station visit before parking the RV (sites in this campground have only power and water). This will be our longest stay so far on this trip: six nights.

Parked at the park office

I am eating my words from yesterday about not getting bothered by mosquitoes. This place is mosquito crazy. Perhaps it was because Rob wasn’t near me (this theory will be tested tomorrow), but I don’t think so. We are experiencing the humidity here too. You know you aren’t from the South when we have the A/C blasting and most other campers are in tents or rigs without their A/C on. We did see lots of fans outside and some bug zappers, which seemed like a good idea to us.

We opted for eating dinner inside and saving the trip to the beach for tomorrow, so we wouldn’t have to bug spray everyone. We celebrated our first month on the road with some sweet treats and Rob reading the kids Diary of a Wimpy Kid to finish off the night.
